The Three Spires Suite:

Joanne Dodds (CAVE)

The Three Spires Suite was written especially to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the orchestra. It tells, in four movements, moments from the rich history of Lichfield. 1 Besieged Cathedral illustrates the Civil war when the building was used as a stronghold in the fights between Crown and Parliament. 2. Dr Johnson, depicts one of Lichfield’s famous offspring: a reflective movement which thinks of his struggles particularly as a young man. 3. Festival: Erasmus and the Bower Queen. This movement brings to life some of the festivals in Lichfield: Lichfield (arts) Festival, the bank holiday Bower parade, and also honours Erasmus Darwin. 4. The Chase Rondo: Fire and Heresy. The final movement depicts a boisterous hunt in the Kings hunting grouds, and also reminds us of the barbaric past when heretics were burned at the stake. In the Market Square in 1611 Edward Wightman was the last man in England to be burned for his beliefs.

One of our members Alex, took on the painting of the model, and decided on a planet theme with a musical link to Holst’s Planet Suite Alex painted a magnificent piece of art, and with the name Planet-hare-ium, the hare was exhibited in St Giles Hospice Bookshop throughout the July Festival. The thirty hares and tortoises were auctioned at the end of the Festival with proceeds being split between a charity of our choice - Cancer Research UK - and Lichfield Festival for school and Community projects.
